The Record
Measured across the 127 sessions where all three overnight venues reported. The three-venue series begins March 2, 2026.
One caveat belongs with the record. $15.79 billion is a three-venue figure, and the three-venue series only begins in March 2026. On BlueOcean alone, November 4 was the eighth largest night of the past year, behind June 23 at $13.52 billion. What made the total a record was Bruce Markets: its $5.97 billion was more than double its own previous best.

Against the whole market
A record overnight session is only interesting if the day around it was not also a record. It was not. US consolidated volume on 4 November was 21.94 billion shares, which ranks sixteenth of the 127 sessions in this window. The night was far more unusual than the day it sat beside.
| 3 November | 4 November | Multiple | |
|---|---|---|---|
| US consolidated volume | 17.49B shares | 21.94B shares | 1.26× |
| Three-venue overnight | 110.5M shares | 305.1M shares | 2.76× |
| Overnight share of the market | 0.632% | 1.391% | 2.20× |
Market figures from Cboe's consolidated volume series. The overnight tape moved 2.2 times as hard as the market it sits inside.
Across the 126 sessions where both series are complete, the overnight tape runs a median of 0.703% of consolidated share volume and 0.524% of notional, peaking at 0.712% of notional in July and bottoming at 0.384% in September. At 1.391% of shares, 4 November was roughly double the normal share of the US tape.
That amplification is not a one-night artifact. Regressed on complete weeks through October, a one per cent change in consolidated notional maps to 1.67 per cent in overnight notional (t 5.5, r² 0.73), and 2.31 per cent on a share basis. The overnight session does not simply track the market. It magnifies it, and the magnification is stable enough to measure.

What Arrived Between 8pm and 4am
The overnight session exists to absorb information that cannot wait for 9:30am. On this night it absorbed three separate pieces of it.
Chips had just rebounded
Monday's close left chip stocks below their summer lows. Tuesday reversed it: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose about 2.6% with all thirty members higher, and the Nasdaq added 0.83%, snapping a three-day losing streak.
AMD reports, and the move fades
Revenue of $13.4B and non-GAAP earnings of $2.09 against roughly $1.94 expected. The stock traded up five to eight per cent in extended hours, then pared. Our tape shows AMD's overnight VWAP 517 bps above the prior close on $539M of volume, yet by the regular open the gap had collapsed to 8 bps.
Korea sells semiconductors
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each fell more than 4.5%, and the KOSPI dropped four per cent intraday before nearly erasing it. The driver was expectation rather than policy: with a divided government projected, traders repriced the risk of tighter scrutiny of AI infrastructure spending.
Priced in US instruments
KORU, the three-times levered South Korea product, printed $353M at 745 bps below the prior close. SK Hynix's US line was 335 bps lower on $239M. Of the hundred largest names on BlueOcean's book, 72 were negative, and the notional-weighted indication was -151 bps.
The open goes the other way
The Dow rose 1,022 points, two per cent, with the S&P and Nasdaq each up 1.3%. Names the overnight tape had marked down opened well above their overnight VWAPs: TQQQ was 366 bps lower overnight and opened 420 bps above the prior close.
The night was not unusually wrong about direction. It was unusually large, and it was pricing a different piece of news than the one the open cared about.
Sixty-eight per cent of the top hundred names pointed the same way as the eventual prior-close-to-open gap, against a 71.0% median across the previous 147 sessions. The notional-weighted timing differential was +2 bps, at the 56th percentile of that history. Individual reversals were violent; the session as a whole was ordinary in that respect.

Venue Composition
From March through August, BlueOcean held between 85.7% and 88.9% of the two-venue tape every single month. That changed in September.
| Venue | Notional | Share | Shares | Trades | Symbols | Median ind. | % positive |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BlueOcean | $9.57B | 60.6% | 189,856,127 | 1,552,938 | 951 | -71.0 bps | 32.1% |
| Bruce Markets | $5.97B | 37.8% | 111,287,196 | 1,131,303 | 843 | -87.1 bps | 27.5% |
| Moon ATS | $0.25B | 1.6% | 3,997,306 | 40,639 | 198 | -91.8 bps | 27.3% |
The important point is which side moved. BlueOcean's nightly average is flat to higher, $5.01 billion across March to August against $5.35 billion across September to November. Bruce's tripled, from $0.75 billion a night to $2.72 billion.
| Month | BlueOcean avg/night | Bruce avg/night | BlueOcean share | Bruce share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | $3.89B | $0.49B | 88.9% | 11.1% |

| May 2026 | $4.91B | $0.76B | 86.7% | 13.3% |
| June 2026 | $7.23B | $1.06B | 87.2% | 12.8% |
| July 2026 | $6.19B | $0.96B | 86.5% | 13.5% |
| August 2026 | $4.20B | $0.70B | 85.7% | 14.3% |
| September 2026 | $3.04B | $0.78B | 79.5% | 20.5% |
| October 2026 | $3.45B | $1.41B | 71.0% | 29.0% |
| November 4 | $9.57B | $5.97B | 61.6% | 38.4% |
Two-venue basis. Both venues reported every month in this window, so the comparison needs no exclusions. Moon is omitted because it is missing 44 sessions over the period, including all of May.

Where the Dollars Actually Sit
Share counts and dollar counts describe two different markets. Low-priced names dominate the volume tape and are almost absent from the dollar tape.
Share of volume by price band
Share of notional by price band
The bottom of the tape
Names under $15 made up 52.5% of shares traded and 5.6% of the dollars. On the unfiltered file, names under $1 alone were 23.6% of shares and 0.1% of notional.
The top of the tape
Names above $500 were 1.7% of shares and 23.9% of the dollars. Above $200, 4.8% of shares carried 43.1% of the notional.
What the filter costs
The $50,000 institutional floor removes 72.8% of BlueOcean's symbols for the night, 3,496 down to 951, and 0.17% of the notional.

Median indication by sector
Only two groups had a majority of names positive: Consumer Defensive at 78.9% and Basic Materials at 71.1%, together $37 million of notional against Technology's $2.48 billion. The same ranking holds on Bruce's independent book: Technology -144 bps with 11% positive, ETFs -122 bps, Industrials -95 bps. The tilt was real but it was not breadth, it was concentration in one industry.

Quoted Liquidity
Spread without size is not liquidity, so every figure here carries its quoted depth beside it. BlueOcean's book only: spreads from different venues are not comparable without controlling for quote size, so no cross-venue comparison is offered.
Does volume buy a tighter quote?
Yes, and the relationship is strong and monotone. Across 203,245 symbol-days with a usable quote, the correlation between a name's notional on the day and its quoted spread in basis points is -0.59 on logs. The most active names quote thirty times tighter than the least active.
| Daily notional | Symbol-days | Spread bps | Spread cents | Avg price | Median depth | % of dollars |

| Under $250K | 94,280 | 308.9 | 403.9 | $89 | $14K | 1.1% |

BlueOcean book, 250 sessions from 2 September 2025 to 29 October 2026. Spreads are notional-weighted within each bucket; depth is the median across symbol-days. Buckets are by the notional traded in that name on that day, so one symbol appears in different buckets on different days.
The top bucket is thirty times tighter in basis points but only six times tighter in cents, and against the bucket below it is actually wider: 62.6 cents against 45.1.
That inversion is the whole point of quoting this in basis points. Average price climbs from $89 in the least active bucket to $512 in the most active, so a name can quote a far tighter percentage of its own price while costing more per share to cross. Anyone sizing a ticket in cents and anyone sizing it in basis points will rank these buckets differently. Depth moves the same way as price, from a $14,000 median at the touch to $102,000, and the top bucket is 0.9% of symbol-days carrying 47.7% of all the dollars.

But volume is not tightness

4 November 2026, BlueOcean book, ordered by spread. SOXL carried marginally more notional than QQQ and quoted seven times wider on a fifteenth of the depth.
Across the full year the split runs along instrument type rather than size alone. Exchange-traded funds quote 17.7 basis points notional-weighted at an average price of $225; single stocks quote 32.8 at $472. Broad index products are a different market again: SPY and QQQ quote inside two basis points with a third to half a million dollars at the touch, while the levered semiconductor products that dominated this session quote seven to ten times wider on a tenth of the depth.

Sandisk's 12.4 bps is $1.35 a share at a $1,093 VWAP, with 32 shares bid. A tight basis-point spread on a four-figure stock is still a wide dollar spread against small size.

Elections and the Tape
One clean observation, and it carries a confound worth stating plainly.
Sessions are keyed by trade date, and the file dated D is the night before D. That decides what this dataset can say. The 2026 midterm result landed inside the session dated November 4, which is the results night, and that session is the record.
The effect did not arrive as breadth. Only 32.1% of names priced above their prior close, and the tilt sat in one industry: Technology at a median -135 bps with 16.2% of names positive, against +248 bps and 71.1% positive in Basic Materials. The transmission was reported at the time as a repricing of AI regulatory risk under a divided government, and it reached the tape through semiconductor exposure rather than through the broad market.
Three qualifications belong with it. The same window carried a large-capitalisation semiconductor earnings report, so the election cannot be isolated as the cause. The session is a single observation: the 2024 presidential election precedes this dataset, and for the 2025 off-year election the file for the results night was never collected, leaving only the night before. And the regular session opened two per cent higher the following morning, so the overnight tape and the opening auction read the same result in opposite directions.
What the week does support is a shape rather than a magnitude, and with the 3 November file now backfilled it can be read on the full three-venue tape. That session carried $4.11 billion, 0.82 times the trailing twenty-session average and 87th of the 127 complete sessions on record. The next night carried $15.79 billion. A 3.8-fold jump in a single night, both sessions complete across all three venues.
Direction turned with it. On 3 November the tape was mildly firmer: a median indication of plus 4.2 basis points on BlueOcean with 53.6% of names above their prior close, plus 8.9 and 57.0% on Bruce. One night later it read minus 71 basis points with 32.1% positive. The market went into the vote slightly firmer, priced the result sharply lower overnight, and then opened two per cent higher.
The two nights before that cannot be read on the full tape, because BlueOcean's files for 30 October and 2 November were never delivered. On Bruce, which reported continuously through the week, those sessions ran $3.10 billion and $2.18 billion against a $1.41 billion October average, before $1.56 billion on 3 November and $5.97 billion on the night of the result. The same shape, on one venue, for two nights longer.

The three venues
Battle of the Overnight ATS Titans
One night shows the tape under load. This takes the same three venues across 199 sessions and asks what the balance between them is doing: two stress tests, the flow shift decomposed name by name with FINRA's independent confirmation by tier, quoted spreads always paired with quote size, and six activity clusters across the venue universe. The share move this page catches in a single session is the subject of its Part II.

Measuring What Survives
The structural question underneath the tape: how the match occurs, and when. It runs the Form ATS-N record of all 33 NMS-equity ATSs against the FINRA Rule 4552 tape, with the reference-price census, the locked-market count and the venue-by-venue placements. It is where the overnight session gets placed against every other way an ATS can form a price.

Methodology
Coverage
- Three overnight ATSs: BlueOcean (BOATS), Bruce Markets and Moon ATS, from each venue's own nightly file
- Three-venue comparisons use the 127 sessions where all three reported, beginning 2 March 2026
- BlueOcean's own series runs 250 sessions from 2 September 2025 to 29 October 2026
- US consolidated volume is Cboe's historical market volume series, summed across all 21 reporting market participants per day. It carries shares, notional and trade count, and runs to T-1; 4 November's share figure comes from Cboe's same-day file, which publishes shares only
Known gaps
- BlueOcean files for 30 October and 2 November 2026 were never delivered, so those two sessions are excluded from every comparison here and remain pending. The 3 November file arrived late, on 4 November, and has been backfilled: that session is complete and included
- Moon is missing 44 sessions over the period, including all of May 2026, which is why the venue-share series is drawn on a BlueOcean against Bruce basis
Definitions
- Overnight indication is session VWAP against the prior regular-session close, in basis points of that close
- The gap to open is prior close to next regular-session open. The timing differential is next open against overnight VWAP
- Spread and depth are session averages of the venue's own quoted book
- Figures apply the institutional filter, a $50,000 notional minimum with positive volume, except where the unfiltered file is named explicitly
- Prior closes and opens come from the enrichment step, not from the venues
