// 24-HOUR TRADING LANDSCAPE
U.S. equity markets are moving toward round-the-clock trading. Four overnight ATSs now operate alongside traditional exchanges, a fifth has filed to join them, and the first 24-hour national exchange has been live since September 2025. This is the landscape we monitor.

First dedicated U.S. overnight lit ATS. Central limit order book operating 8 PM – 4 AM ET Sunday through Friday.
COVID-era volatility and meme-stock momentum drive demand for after-hours access. Retail platforms begin routing overnight.
24 Exchange files Form 1 to become the first SEC-registered 24-hour national securities exchange.
Nasdaq-powered overnight matching engine. Competes directly with BlueOcean.
OTC Markets subsidiary launches attributable overnight order flow. Third active U.S. overnight venue.
SEC grants 24X Exchange approval as a national securities exchange. Full 24-hour lit book for NMS securities.
24X begins live operations as the first SEC-registered 24-hour national securities exchange, launching with a limited set of mega-cap NMS symbols that expands over subsequent months.
Aggregates and normalizes data across three of the four overnight ATSs, plus the 24X national exchange.
DTCC's NSCC extends clearing to cover overnight trades in the same cycle as daytime. Removes the last systemic clearing-risk objection to institutional overnight participation.
SEC approves CTA and UTP Plan Amendments for 23x5 SIP operation (Sunday 9 PM through Friday 8 PM ET). Production launch December 6, 2026. Six industry UAT weekends begin October 2.
The largest independent NMS Stock ATS files a Form ATS-N/MA introducing an Overnight Trading Session on its ASPEN book and Hosted Pools, 8 PM to 9:30 AM ET, with a static reference price band rather than the NBBO. Filed and live on EDGAR, not yet trading. It would be the fifth overnight venue.
React to earnings, geopolitical events, and Asian market moves before the 9:30 AM open. Overnight trading eliminates the gap risk of holding positions through the closed session.
Overnight ATS data reveals institutional positioning before the bell. Understanding venue-level flow and timing differentials provides an informational edge for pre-market strategy.
Monitoring overnight venues is no longer optional. Reg NMS obligations, best execution requirements, and the expansion to 24 hours create new compliance surface area.
The bridge between on-chain and off-chain isn't coming. It is already here, processing institutional flow at scale on DTCC's Collateral AppChain, Canton, and Kinexys. RWA tokenization passed $26B in early 2026, tokenized Treasuries cleared $11B, and the GENIUS Act of 2025 codified the split between payment stablecoins and yield-bearing Investment Tokens. The 24-hour trading question is no longer just when the bell rings. It is how positions settle once it stops.
Once 23/5 launches on December 6, the market trades 115 of the week's 168 hours and 92% of the hours still dark are the weekend. NSCC has cleared 24x5 since June and the SIPs are approved for 23x5, but nothing that settles a trade moves on a Saturday, and Fedwire and NSS reach only six days in 2028 or 2029. What an always-on market demands of issuers, infrastructure and regulators, with a panel by panel guide to the SEC roundtable.
We track three of the four overnight ATSs daily.
